How Eminem Helped My Son With Autism Improve His Speech

Yes, you read that right. Eminem. So, my son Liam is on the autism spectrum. He actually spoke early, but he was super hard to understand. We were translators for years, and sometimes we still are. When he was 5, I was told that even though he spoke, he was still considered to have a speech delay. Let me take a minute and say thank you to the two women who’ve been my son’s speech-language pathologists. He’s been in speech therapy since he was 5. People can finally understand what he’s trying to say, and he’s doing much better with context. However, he sometimes stutters and still has issues with some words. Good teachers helped me to achieve success. I was able to overcome autism because I had good teachers. At age 2 1/2 I was placed in a structured nursery school with experienced teachers. From an early age I was taught to have good manners and to behave at the dinner table. Children with autism need to have a structured day, and teachers who know how to be firm but gentle. The national average for autism diagnosis in America is 13 in every 1,000 children. New Jersey’s average is 28 per every 1,000 children According to new data from Rutgers University, New Jersey preschoolers are being diagnosed with autism at the highest rate in the United States. The National Autistic Society defines autism as a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them.
